For six months, Ripon could have been called “Madison North.”

   But as of Monday, Ripon has lost a significant portion of its pull in the capitol building.

   Both state Secretary of Veterans Affairs Daniel Zimmerman and state Secretary of Corrections Cathy Jess were replaced Monday morning as new Gov. Tony Evers took office.

   Despite losing their jobs amid the transition, both Riponites noted appreciation for the chance to affect change on a grander platform.

   “I was just humbled and honored to be in the position,” Jess said following her six months as secretary.

   “There was a significant amount of other things that I wanted to get accomplished,” Zimmerman said after 23 months on the job. “But, like I remind everybody, this is part of our democratic system ... and the best thing we can do in our system is to do the best transition that we could possibly do.”
