Wharf supporters celebrate

It’s official!

The Green Lake community has raised more than a quarter-million dollars for a beautiful wharf in Deacon Mills Park.

The fund-raising goal was reached by the Sept. 1 deadline. In the photo at right, supporters Ryan Meiborg, Wendy Schultz, Mary-Jo Johnson and Joe Norton celebrate next to the wooden sailboat in the park, showing the amounts raised.

“We did it!” Norton hollered to bystanders and passing vehicles.

Johnson — president of the Downtown Green Lake Renewal Project — expects the dredging of Dartford Bay to begin in early October. Completion of the 270-by-6-foot wharf is projected for spring, in time for boating season.

The wharf will stay in place year-round, with new rip rap, shoreline flowers and benches. Leftover donations will be used for maintenance, Johnson said.

Green Lake Common Council members approved bids for the project Tuesday evening.
