A Markesan man passed away due to a car crash Saturday night.

Kevin K. Steinmetz, 29, of Markesan died in the fatal, one-vehicle crash on County Road K, west of Lakeview Road.

According to the Green Lake County Sheriff’s office’s press release, the county received a call Sunday morning regarding the crash, and when the emergency responders arrived on the scene at 9:09 a.m., they found a single vehicle secluded among trees with Steinmetz deceased.

However, “due to the extent of the damage to the vehicle and also trees that were obstructing access to the scene, a path had to be cut to the final point of rest of the vehicle,” the release stated.

Chief Deputy Sheriff Mark Putzke noted they believe the cause of the crash is due to speeding.

Based on a preliminary examination of the scene, the 2004 Subaru was headed west on County Road K at a higher rate of speed when the vehicle left the road and stuck a group of trees.

“The vehicles’ final point of rest made it difficult to see from the roadway and the crash is believed to have happened at approximately 11:30 p.m. Saturday night,” the release said.

The incident was responded to by the Green Lake County Sheriff’s office, Wisconsin State Patrol, Markesan/Grand River Fire/Rescue and Emergency Management, Southern Green Lake County Ambulance and the Green Lake County Coroner’s office.

This fatal traffic crash is being investigated by the Green Lake County Sheriff’s office and coroner, in conjunction with a Wisconsin State Patrol reconstruction.

   The investigation is ongoing.
