A Markesan man passed away during a fatal residential fire south of Green Lake Sunday morning.

According to the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office, Justin G. Lewis, 29, died in the blaze.

The fire was first discovered Sunday morning at around 1:14 a.m., when a citizen noticed the fire and notified the authorities.

“The original call to our E-911 Center was indeed by a citizen on the south side of the lake, who just happened to be up at that time of day and then saw the flames,” Chief Deputy Mark Putzke said.

Fire and emergency teams then responded to W2081 Tuleta Hill Road, Markesan — a home located just off the south shore of Green Lake, approximately five miles north of Markesan.

The Markesan Fire Department responded to the incident with assistance from the neighboring fire districts of Brandon-Fairwater, Friesland, Ripon, Marquette, Kingston and the Fond du Lac RIT team. Additional responders were the Markesan Ambulance and Emergency Management, Green Lake County Coroner, and Sheriff’s Office, also the State Fire Marshall’s Office, noted a press release from the Green Lake County Sheriff’s Office.

When deputies arrived at the residence at around 1:24 a.m., the house was fully engulfed in flames.
