When Subway closed its doors last week Monday in Green Lake, it marked the first aftershock for the city since the announcement of Heidel House’s May 20 closing.

Owner Tracy Swayze explained he and his wife were thinking of closing the store, located at 503 Mill Street, for a while as a result of a lack of sales.

“It’s [because] of declining sales due to declining visitors over the years; Green Lake is not as busy as it used to be and it’s almost impossible to find help,” Swayze said.

However, he pointed to the closing of Heidel House as the deciding factor in the sandwich store’s sudden April closure, instead of waiting until after the summer business rush.

“[Heidel House] is what kind of drives tourism in Green Lake, for part of it anyway, and with that closing, it’s like, ‘OK, what we were expecting to be our busy season [this summer] may not be, so why keep losing money?’” Swayze said.
