A Montello man has been arrested for allegedly driving while under the influence after he struck a parked car, the Market Fresh Foods building and nearly hit police officers Wednesday evening.

The 44-year-old man, Philip Anthony Petro, was released later that evening to a responsible party.

According to Ripon Police, he struck a parked vehicle in the 300 block of East Fond du Lac Street Wednesday at around 8:30 p.m. The driver allegedly then left the scene of the crash.

According to the report from the Ripon Police Department, callers notified law enforcement at 8:39 p.m. that the truck also partially left the roadway and was on the sidewalk in the 100 block of East Fond du Lac Street near Market Fresh Foods.

When police arrived at the scene, the driver “was found slumped over the steering wheel of the truck,” the press release said. “When officers initiated contact with the man, the truck accelerated rapidly and drove through the parking lot of the Market Fresh grocery store and struck the north side wall of the building.”

As the officers attempted to remove the driver from the vehicle “the truck rolled back into the roadway of E. Fond du Lac Street, nearly striking officers and a patrol vehicle. The man was then removed from the truck and provided medical attention,” the press release said.

The driver was arrested at the scene of the crash for several offenses, including operating while under the influence (1st offense), hit and run, operating left of the center line and for having open intoxicants in a motor vehicle.

The city of Ripon Police Department was assisted at the scene by the Ripon Guardian Ambulance Service.
