A small series of fires alongside County Road KK that blackened a telephone pole Monday may have been started intentionally.
Firefighters from Ripon and Rosendale both arrived to put out flames between Highway 23 and Callan Road after a passerby alerted police.
Smoke blew south across KK as town of Ripon Police Capt. Howard Stibb directed traffic while firefighters made quick work with hoses and fire swatters.
However, Rosendale Fire Chief Dave McCoy pointed out that it seemed odd the relatively small fires were spread out half a mile down the road.
“That’s a little questionable,” he said, adding the fire seemed unlikely to be “from a vehicle coming by that threw a spark because it was too far off the road.”
Because of the fire department’s suspicions, McCoy contacted the Fond du Lac County Sheriff’s Department to investigate.
He added that there wasn’t any danger but the burning grass did ignite a telephone pole.
