   Q. What do you buy your preschool-teacher wife for her anniversary?

   A. Clown shoes.

Not many men besides Joe Kerch could get away with giving their loved one a pair of bright red, bulbous tipped, size 14 happy feet.

Welcome to the world of Jan Kerch, teacher for 30 years at Discovery Preschool in Ripon.

   Jan lives to love.

And she loves helping children build confidence, joy and self-esteem to last through their lifetimes of learning.

Even if it means wearing Bozo footwear.

Since 1989, Jan has taught two generations of more than, as she puts it, “1,500 creative brains.” And she’s done so with a commitment to education, innovation and most of all her children in a way that’s unparalleled.

That’s why Jan is the Commonwealth’s 2019 Person of the Year.
