Economic news the past few years has been mostly poor, but benefactors of Ripon College never got the memo.

The largest fund-raising campaign in the school’s 162-year history is off to a dramatic start.

More than $35 million of the ambitious $50 million target has been raised since summer 2010, when the campaign launched.

That’s better than 70 percent of the goal, raised in two and a half years.

“Campaign funds will support new scholarships for students; faculty and student research; off-campus study opportunities; efforts to attract and retain faculty; and enhance facilities,” a news release from the college states.

And now, the campaign is reaching out, with President Zach Messitte announcing the “public phase” of Imagine Tomorrow last week Friday during a campaign kickoff at the Woman’s Club of Wisconsin in Milwaukee.

This was made to a crowd of more than 100 alumni, friends, faculty, staff and students.
