A 22-year-old Mayville man will be OK after accidentally shooting himself last week Wednesday at a Ripon gun range.

The incident occurred while he and his brother were practicing at the Ripon Rifle and Pistol Club at N9089 South Koro Road.

“They were doing draw-and-fire,” town of Ripon Police Capt. Howard Stibb said. “They have military backgrounds; they’re in the reserves. It’s a timed draw ... to point down range and shoot.”

During the course of one of these sessions, something went wrong.

“When he was drawing the weapon out of the holster, he had an accidental discharge where a round went into his right thigh,” Stibb said.

The victim’s brother then called 911 and transported him by car up to the entrance to the gun range, where an ambulance picked up the victim.

An air ambulance was called, and sent to meet the victim at the landing pad at Ripon Medical Center, where he immediately was loaded onto the helicopter and sent to ThedaCare Regional Medical Center in Neenah.
