When “scooping the loop” died in 1994 at the hand of a new city ordinance, it was seen as a pastime of strictly the young.

When it returned last week Saturday night, those “kids” were all grown up — but that didn’t stop them from stepping into a moment from their memories.

For the first time in 25 years, the city of Ripon put its cruising ordinance on pause for an evening to permit an official “Scoop the Loop” night.

Anyone suspicious of whether Riponites would be excited to see it return quickly had those concerns dashed amid hours of traffic in downtown Ripon.

Muscle cars with graying drivers revved their engines, followed by moms in minivans.

Middle-age guys peeled out at stop signs, while elected officials calmly floated around the loop.

And actual kids, wondering what all the excitement was about, took a spin too, with some trapped in the back of the car while their parents relived childhood memories.
