Gene “Eric” Nelson, age 76, of Ripon, passed away on Sunday, January 6, 2019 at the Markesan Resident Home in Markesan with his family by his side.

Eric was born on December 23, 1942 in Algoma, WI the son of Elden and Edith (Stuebs) Nelson. He graduated from Algoma High School and attended UW- River Falls with a degree in Agricultural Education. He served his country in the United States Army from 1968-1971 and the Army Reserves from 1971-1974.

Eric was united in marriage to Marie “Theresa” Wilt on May 28, 1971 in Bel Air, MD. He was a teacher for over 20 years. Eric taught at Kewaunee High School, Green Lake High School, Princeton High School, Wild Rose High School and Southern Door High School. He was a coach for Football, Basketball and Golf. He was also a crop adjustor for the Government, a Field Rep for various canning companies in Wisconsin, and an Inventory Control and Forklift driver for Del Monte in Markesan, WI.

Eric was a born educator. He was quiet and soft spoken with a great sense of humor. He enjoyed bowling, fishing, hunting, playing cards, gardening, watching and feeding the birds, making cribbage boards and enjoyed listening to the Weather Channel and police scanner. He was a Packers, Brewers and Badgers fan.

Eric is survived by his wife, Theresa; son, Shawn (special friend, Angie Shultz) Nelson of Green Lake; daughter, Erica (special friend, Brandon Sosinsky) Nelson of Markesan; grandchildren: Shae (special friend, Eric Lueptow), Bree, Bryn Moderow and Lucas Sosinsky; sister, Jane (Don) Wienke of Algoma; brothers: Roger (Mary) Nelson of Algoma, Lyle (Monica) Nelson of Sturgeon Bay, and Alfred “Fritz” (Joyce) Nelson of College Station, TX; sisters-in-law: Patricia (Jeff) Forster of Joppatowne, MD, Rose (Bill) Jorgenson of Street, MD, Idella (John) Christian of Street, MD, and Kathleen Townsley of Sarasota, FL; brother-in-law, Timothy Mansfield of Bel Air, MD; many nieces, nephews and dear friends. He is preceded in death by his parents, Elden and Edith; parents-in-law, Patrick and Rose Mansfield; sister-in-law, Donna Champ; brothers-in-law: Jeff Smith and James Champ; and best friend, Randall Foss.

A Celebration of Life will be held for Eric at 7:00PM on Friday, January 11, 2019 at Divine Passage Funeral Home, 175 N Douglas Street in Ripon.
