As a former Navy orthodontist, Adam Veit knows a thing or two about being a small-town practitioner.

“It was a small community: only 6,500 people,” Veit said of his most recent posting overseas. “It was really neat being an orthodontist for the community. I’d know all the families, all the people. Every time I’d go down to the grocery store, every aisle I’d go down I’d know a few patients.

“It was really fun to be a part of a community like that.”

Granted, living atop Mount Etna, a volcano in Sicily, Italy, isn’t exactly the same as Ripon.

Yet the Fond du Lac native is thrilled to be coming home.

After years abroad, he and his family are putting down roots in the area as he takes over Johnson Orthodontics from Dr. Lawrence Johnson.

Though Johnson will continue to work limited hours from his old office at 926 South Grove St., Veit now owns the practice and sees patients in Ripon, Oshkosh, Berlin and occasionally Winneconne.

“The locations of his practices are perfect for me. They feel like our kind of people, just comfortable,” Veit said. “It’s just a great place to raise our family, and we look forward to being here for a long, long time.”
