A customer came to Gary Oppermann recently with a problem.

He had a motor that no longer worked because a part had broken.

But it was a very old pump and “you can’t buy them anymore,” Oppermann said.

That didn’t mean the man was out of luck.

   Oppermann had options.

“I said we could do a couple of things: we could machine a key-way on this side and ... re-bush this ... or I have to take the whole thing apart and I could reweld that ... and still-bush this,” he said, referring to different ways he could make the pump whole.

For a lay person, those terms may sound like Greek, but it all makes sense for Oppermann, a tool-and-die maker with more than 30 years of experience.

“I enjoy the challenge of repairing things, and making something from raw stock into something that’s usable,” he explained.

That’s why he opened Oppy Tool & Machining LLC, located off Highway 44 about 3 miles east of Ripon.
