As the books piled up, so did the hats.

Barlow Park/Journey Elementary students participated in book-themed events and goals for a week, culminating in a celebration March 2 of their reading accomplishments and author Dr. Seuss’s birthday.

That included an impossibly tall stack of hats worn by Principal Tanya Sanderfoot to honor each goal reached by the students, all while reading “The 500 Hats of Bartholomew Cubbins” by Suess.

Aided by either Seussian magic or a thin wire, Sanderfoot noted the “Hats Off” theme probably was a better idea than last year’s “Stuck on Reading” celebration, when students earned strips of duct tape instead of hats for the good-sport principal to wear.
