They went to China to discuss 21st century skills in education, but they got a traditional flavor of the country.

Ripon High School Principal Randy Hatlen; his wife, Mary; and Mandy Froehlich, director of innovation and technology for the Ripon Area School District, attended a conference last November in China.

“They call them ‘competencies,’” Randy Hatlen said, “but really, [it’s about] how are we going to change education ... to be more 21st century-based?”

Hatlen and Froehlich presented pictures and stories Monday during the Ripon Area School Board meeting.

Froehlich explained they saw traditional arts, calligraphy and dancing and were served traditional food — including whole fish on a plate.
