A deadline extension to declare candidacy for the Ripon Area School Board election led to a contested race.

Four people will vie in April for three seats currently held by David Scott, David Olson and Gary Rodman that will be open for the School Board election.

Rodman chose to run for re-election, while Olson declared non-candidacy in December.

Scott, meanwhile, chose to take a break from the School Board after missing the deadline for submitting candidacy papers.

When Scott did not hand in his paperwork last week Wednesday, he enabled Ripon residents to have another chance to think about running for the School Board.

According to state statutes, the deadline for submitting candidacy papers must be extended three business days when an incumbent does not declare non-candidacy and does not submit candidacy paperwork within the allotted time.

This meant Ripon residents other than Scott, who can no longer declare candidacy, had the chance to throw their hats into the ring before Monday at 5 p.m.
