As Lee Baird transitions into retirement this fall, he’ll be sitting at a desk in a small building at 904 W. Fond du Lac St., just across the street from the long-time Baird GM building.

   It’s a space that will feel oddly familiar to Lee.

   “That’s the office I started in, and it’s interesting that I’m [going back],” he said, chuckling.

   Of course, that wasn’t exactly yesterday.

   It’s been nearly a half century — 48 years, to be exact — since Lee and wife Katie entered the business selling used cars from that very shop.

   In between those dates? Lee’s seen much change in the industry, but one thing hasn’t: He remains the same, affable, community-minded man, doing everything he can to smash the stereotype associated with car salesmen.
