The Ripon High School volleyball team got off to a slow start on the first day of its season-opening competition last week Thursday.

It dropped its first four matches at the Friendship Tournament, winning just one game along the way.

But the Tigers picked it up after that as it won its first match of the season a day later during the second day of the tournament and just missed winning another.

“I needed to use that first day to experiment a little bit with different combinations, and looking at different things in the lineup,” Ripon head coach Tracy Landerman said, noting she has a lot of kids who can play multiple positions. “I think because of that, we kind of got off to a slow start. But once we started to get more into the day, we started to get a better feel for what was going on, what we need to do.”

The Tigers began the two-day Friendship Tournament, which took place at Just-A-Game Fieldhouse in Wisconsin Dells and was hosted by Kewaskum, with a 20-25, 25-27 loss to Riverdale.

They then dropped their second match to Antigo in three games 10-25, 25-16 and 8-5, before falling to Kewaskum 14-25, 14-25 and Green Bay Preble 15-25, 11-25.

Ripon got off to a much better start on day two as it defeated Oshkosh North 25-21, 25-17.
