All eyes were centered on Cody Jacobson last week Saturday at the Kohl Center in Madison.

The Ripon High School senior was wrestling for the state championship in the final match of the tournament, which was being aired live on Fox Sports Wisconsin.

The normal three periods weren’t enough to decide a winner.

Neither was sudden victory or the two overtimes as Jacobson (285-pound weight class) was tied with Luxemburg Casco’s Phil Rasmussen at 2 after them.

Unfortunately, he fell short in the ultimate tiebreaker as Rasmussen started down at the mat and escaped to win the state title.

While Jacobson couldn’t accomplish his goal of winning a championship, he did record the highest finish (second) of a Ripon wrestler since Blake Roemer won the state competition in 2005.

He was one of two Tigers to reach the podium last weekend as Zach Beck (113) finished fourth.

Ripon also had three other wrestlers compete at the meet, but they all lost in their first match and were eliminated. They were Bradley Gabrielski (106), Ryan Cody (132) and Tucker Bender (220).

“I am very pleased that we had two student-athletes place in the top four at the state tournament,” Ripon head coach Jared Esala said. “We are moving in the right direction. We now have athletes that want to be at the big event and want to be at the top of the podium. The athletes we have now are paving the way for the future of Ripon Wrestling.”
