Last week Saturday’s win did more than just clinch a state tournament berth for the Tigers.

It tied Ripon head coach Dean Vander Plas with Jim Seidl as Ripon’s winningest coach.

Vander Plas won his record-tying 291st game with the Tigers’ 78-63 sectional final win over Martin Luther in Whitefish Bay.

He noted he is honored to be in the same conservation as Seidl, who coached for 30 years (1947 to 1961 and 1963 to 1979) and won six conference titles.

“When I moved to town, Jim was the man,” Vander Plas said, noting it means a lot for him to be able to share the record. “And when I started coaching I got to coach his grandson ... He started what we’re now doing.”

He also added the record is special because of just how many people were a part of it.
