The Ripon High School Tiger girls’ No. 1 doubles tennis team of Elle Lewis and Hadley ran into a buzz saw last week Wednesday.

It was defeated by an undefeated Xavier team 6-0, 6-0 in the first round of the Kohler Sectional.

The Xavier team, which was comprised of Elise Curtin and Ellie Macksood, won all three of its matches at the meet to improve to a perfect 30-0 on the season.

While Lewis and Neper were unable to scratch out a win in any of the games, Ripon head coach Breck Speers was proud of how they fought against a tough team.

“It’s easy to psych yourself out and think, ‘Oh, we don’t have a chance,’” Speers said. “But I told them to go for every ball.

When the other team would smash it hard, just run as hard as you can try to scrape it off the ground, pull it off the fence or whatever. Elle and Hadley are good athletes. They hung in there. They kept great attitudes. They returned a lot of balls.”

He added he was surprised they didn’t win any games because they had some advantages where if they had won one more point they would have won a game here and there.
