If there is one positive head coach Eric Cruise took away from the Ripon College baseball team’s annual spring break trip to Florida, it was the team’s ability to overcome adversity.

The Red Hawks bounced back from some tough losses and never quit fighting in others en route to posting a 3-6 record at the RussMatt Central Florida Invitational.

Never was it on display more than last week Thursday when they defeated Ramapo 6-4 and Clarkson 8-1 for two of their wins.

This followed a 9-8 loss a day earlier to Bard, a game in which they led 8-6 late in the contest.

“The two games we won Thursday we needed because we had done good things,” Cruise said. “We blew the game against Bard [last week] Wednesday; giving up those runs in the [seventh inning] hurt because that was a game we should have and could have won. We did not pitch well at all ... To come out against a Ramapo team, who is one of the tops in their conference in one of the best conferences in the country, was positive for how our guys responded.”

The Red Hawks also showed character a day later as they clawed back from a 9-1 deficit against Benedictine after three innings to close to within 10-8. They later dropped the game 12-8.
