After three-straight losses to begin its annual spring break trip to Florida, the Ripon College softball team picked up its first win of the season Monday morning.
The Red Hawks defeated Macalester College (Minn.) 5-0 behind a two-hit shutout by Lexi Reetz.
Entering the game, they had dropped contests to Millsaps College (Miss.) 6-0, Roger Williams University (R.I.) 9-4 and Bethel University (Minn.) 3-2.
Against Macalester, Ripon exploded for four runs on two hits and two errors in the fourth inning and added an insurance run in the fifth inning to make it 5-0.
It received two RBIs from freshman Julia Sanchez and an RBI each from Stephanie Cartwright and Melanie Kobelt.
That was all the offense it would need as Reetz (1-2) was on her game in the circle. In addition to allowing just two hits, the sophomore struck out five and walked just three.
The Red Hawks also hung with Bethel in their first game of the day Monday, but couldn’t overcome a slow start.
They fell behind the Royals 3-0 in the top of the first, before answering with single runs in both the bottom of the first and second on RBIs from Reetz and Cartwright.
That was as close as Ripon got as it had just two batters reach base the rest of the game — including one who made it to second base with just one out in the sixth inning.
