Ripon native Maddie Koster goes up for a shot in Ripon’s win over Knox.

After scoring just seven points in the second quarter last week Saturday, the coaching staff had a simple message for the Ripon College women’s basketball team.

“We told them to get back to how they play: take care of the ball, work for good shots, rebound and transition back on defense,” head coach Lauren Johnson said.

The Red Hawks did just that as they out-scored Knox 30-14 in the third quarter to take a 58-40 lead.

They cruised from there en route to a 72-58 road victory,

The win marks their ninth straight to close the regular season and gives them momentum entering this weekend’s Midwest Conference Tournament at Cornell.

While Ripon (15-3 conference, 17-6 overall) needed to recover from a sluggish second quarter to win the game, it got off to a pretty strong start as it led the Prairie Fire 21-14 after one quarter.

But the Red Hawks couldn’t maintain their level of play.

According to Johnson, they missed layups and didn’t take good shots in the second quarter.
