Teara Morgenroth swings at a pitch during the first game of Ripon’s doubleheader against Finlandia.

The Ripon College softball team traveled to Illinois last weekend for doubleheaders against Illinois College and Monmouth.

Unfortunately, the team forgot to bring its bats.

The Red Hawks mustered just four runs on 10 hits in the four games — all of which were losses.

They fell to Illinois College last week Saturday 3-1 and 8-0 (five innings), while dropping games to Monmouth Sunday 4-2 and 5-1.

“I think we can almost lump all four together,” Ripon head coach Steve Wammer said of the losses. “We just had a real struggle hitting the ball and that I think took us a little bit by surprise.”

The reason he was taken aback by the difficulties at the plate was Ripon (1-5 conference, 6-16 overall) had done pretty well in the games leading up to last weekend.

“If you look at the first four games when we came back from Florida, we had 35 hits and we hit about .285, almost .300,” Wammer said. “We struck out about 7% of our plate appearances. And then you look at this past weekend, we had 10 hits and that was hitting about .112 ... And we struck out about 1 out of every 5 times ... And I don’t think the competition was that much different, so it was frustrating. Some of it can be a long road trip. We’re not as used to that and maybe we didn’t get into it right away. Maybe we pressed a little bit.”
