There weren’t any major surprises among the athletes who advanced, or didn’t, for the Ripon High School track and field teams Monday at the Ripon Division 2 Regional.

And that resulted in good news for the Tigers as they qualified 22 entries, consisting of 23 athletes in 16 events, to Thursday’s Wisconsin Lutheran Sectional.

As a team, the boys finished third out of eight schools with 103.5 points, while the girls were fourth out of eight with 79 points.

Waupun won the men’s title with 154 points, while Mayville captured the girls’ crown with 144.

“There were a couple close ones that didn’t quite make it, but we thought we had a good chance in a lot of the relays, which turns out the relays were a strong point,” Ripon head coach Chris Gatzke said. “... We knew our field events were a little bit stronger, particularly on the girls side, and so that was helpful.”

Five of the Tigers’ six relays advanced to sectionals, which include the 400, 1,600 and 3,200 on the boys’ side and the 400 and 800 for the girls. All five teams finished second, which put them comfortably into the next round as the top four in each event move on.

Ripon also had a clean sweep in the triple and long jump on the girls’ side as it entered three in each event and qualified three.
