The Ripon High School golf team’s opening match of the season Monday went about how head coach Rick Kelm expected.

“It was pretty easy to see that it was a first match,” he said of the competition. “We had some aspects of the game that definitely need some attention, but we expect that early in the season. We haven’t played very many holes; in fact, holes at our home course we were able to first play last [week] Friday. So it’s going to take a little time.”

The Tigers finished sixth out of eight schools at the Winneconne mini-tour stop, which took place at Lake Breeze Golf Club.

They ended with 199 strokes, which was one behind fifth-place Campbellsport.

Kewaskum won the meet with a 165, followed by Plymouth (169), Kettle Moraine Lutheran (180), Winneconne (184), Campbellsport (198), Ripon (199) and Waupun (212). Berlin did not field a complete team for the meet.

While the Tigers showed some opening-match jitters, Kelm was happy overall with their effort.
