The Ripon College softball team experienced mixed results in its opening weekend of the season.

It split a pair of games each day last weekend at the ACM Dome Tournament in Rochester, Minn.

The Red Hawks defeated Rockford 4-0 in their first game last week Saturday, while beating Macalester 2-0 in their opening game Sunday.

They dropped game two each day to the University of Wisconsin-La Crosse and Luther 8-0 and 9-0, respectively, in five innings.

“We tend at this point to look at the process more so than just wins and losses,” Ripon head coach Steve Wammer said of the 2-2 record. “But to go in there and get a couple of wins [was nice].”

He added the two teams that beat the Red Hawks are “very good teams,” with La Crosse being a member of the perennially-strong WIAC and Luther being ranked No. 10 in the country entering the weekend. Its now ranked No. 16.

Among the bright spots in the games was the pitching of Lexi Reetz. The senior was in midseason form as she pitched 14 innings of shutout ball, allowing just six hits and three walks. She also struck out 23 in the two games.

The performance included a one-hit shutout, 11-strikeout effort in the 2-0 win over Macalester.
