The three-game set against the rival St. Norbert Knights that began with a bang Monday ended with a resounding thud Tuesday.

And in the end, Ripon College head baseball coach Eric Cruise could find little reason to be hopeful following a doubleheader sweep.

“We lost 14-2, and it was just an awful game,” Cruise said shortly after the second game, the sting still evident. “We were not good at all.”

Earlier in the afternoon, his team also lost, though only by a 4-2 mark that time.

In that contest, the Red Hawks (1-2 conference, 5-9 overall) did offer at least one beacon of hope despite a rough beginning to the game.

“We gave up those four in the first and another defensive error killed us,” Cruise said of an error at second with the bases loaded and nobody out. “We probably should have gave up [only] two.”

Cruise took a share of the blame, noting that better defensive adjustments could have been made in the outfield.
