The Ripon American Legion Post 43 baseball team jumped out to an early lead and avoided a late scare to defeat Lomira/Theresa 14-7 Monday night on the road.

It marked the first conference loss of the season for Lomira/Theresa, which entered the game 4-0.

Meanwhile, Ripon improved to 3-0 heading into its showdown with another undefeated team, Waupun, tonight (Wednesday).

“They’re definitely a good team; there’s no doubt about it,” Ripon head coach Austin Fenner said of Lomira/Theresa. “They always have had a good program, even dating back to when I was playing. I don’t know what it is; if it’s just their youth programs over in the area of Lomira and Brownsville ... or if it’s just their ability to take from a couple different schools ... To beat Lomira, that’s a good way to start off our week.”

Ripon scored three runs in the top of the first inning and added two more in the third to take a 5-0 lead.

It eventually led Lomira/Thereasa 9-1 after five and a half innings.

“It’s always nice to get the first lead and get a little bit of a comfortable lead on your opponent,” Fenner said. “It helps your starting pitcher ... He’s able to have a little run support right off the bat without even having to pitch yet.”
