0-6, 1-6 was an all too common score for the Ripon High School boys’ tennis team last week Wednesday at the Kohler Sectional.

All three of the Tiger positions lost their first match by that mark, with only Jordan Whitrock getting a second chance at the competition.

The junior took advantage of it as he defeated Kohler’s Ben Guesneau 5-7, 6-1, 6-1 to finish in third place at No. 3 singles bracket.

Tyler Granados at No. 1 singles and the No. 1 doubles team of Iffer Long and Theo Rauch lost their one and only match at the meet.

For Whitrock, the win in his second match avenged a 4-6, 2-6 loss to Guesneau earlier in the season and is the first victory Ripon head coach Breck Speers can remember a Tiger player picking up against Kohler in recent memory.

“What he did well is just pulled out the same courage he’s had all year. He’s been a fighter; he’s gone in three sets in so many matches,” Speers said of the junior, noting his opponent has taken tennis lessons all his life and plays for Kohler, which has indoor tennis courts. “... They’ve always been strong, but somehow Jordan found it within himself to just wear this guy down. His opponent was very frustrated on the court and handed his head to him and Kohler went home with a defeat that night.”
