IT WAS EARLY ON A MARCH morning at Kiawah Island Golf Resort along the coast of South Carolina.

“We were there for a wedding,” said Ric Damm, who visited the island with wife Chrissy. “I just got up in the morning and grabbed the camera and went to watch the sun rise.”

Anyone who knows the Ripon resident would not be surprised by this. A renowned shutterbug who runs his own photography business in addition to his social media role at Ripon College, Ric’s been known to shoot photos of all sorts.

As he strolled along the wet sand, he watched the waves roll in off the Atlantic as color crept into the sky.

“I always find that when I’m in situations like that, I feel closer to God,” he said.

He was surprised to find that he was all alone on this stretch of beach. Then he paused, and snapped a photo.

     Lots of photos, actually.

Ric was pleased, though not overwhelmed by the images he captured.

“I thought I had something [nice] with the birds in the foreground and everything,” he said. “... I know I’ve taken more beautiful pictures.”

While that may be true, there’s something special about one he snapped that morning.

It’s been named the winner of an online contest run by Kiawah Island Golf Resort. ...
