     BRANDI DOLGNER TAKES pride in the fact that people usually can’t pull the wool over her eyes.

     “I’m pretty good at picking up things,” she said.

     Which is why her boyfriend, Nick Schlehlein, was worried.

     “The entire time he thought that I was going figure it out,” Brandi said. “But he had me thrown so many different ways that I didn’t even think of it.”

     Instead, the newly engaged Ripon resident never saw any of it coming: not the ring, not Nick coming close, not the family members sneaking in with cameras at the ready. ...

     NICK AND BRANDI HAVE been dating for nearly seven years,  and have been talking about marriage for a while. But, Brandi says, she wasn’t expecting to see him down on one knee just yet.

     Which may be why she didn’t recognize the signs Saturday, July 13.

     ... a text came in from her mom.

     “She’s like, ‘Hey, you should come over; Nick’s parents are coming over for pizza and cards,’” Brandi said. ...

          So they get over to Brandi’s parents’ home in Waupun, and “my dad had all his treasures out from metal detecting,” said Brandi, still completely unaware. “He [regularly] shows all his stuff off [that he finds detecting]. He loves it ...
