To the Editor:
... Dear Superintendent Whitrock ... While I understand the desire to show support of the boys’ basketball team achieving their impressive accomplishments and I understand you may be faced with a decreased attendance by both students and staff I do not support a district-wide school closing.
The purpose of school is to teach. Every moment in school is a potential “teaching moment,” and in this case you are teaching students that sports in general, and boys’ basketball in particular, is so important that it warrants school closing.
... Read between the lines to imply what message is being sent to all the other students who are not affiliated or interested in sports. “You, the other, are not as important as this group over here. We value their contribution over yours so much so that every student and staff member will have time off. Go Tigers.” ...
