To the Editor:

(Re: “Vetting process for immigrants must be better,” Feb. 16, 2017) I am writing in response to a recent letter to the editor in which the writer claims that the vetting process for immigrants has been watered down and anyone is let into the country.

... Refugees wanting to come the USA must go through an 18-step, rigorous vetting process and Syrian refugees must go through two additional steps.

... I discovered how rigorous the vetting process is and believe agencies responsible for people seeking to immigrate to the USA are very serious in their efforts to protect us from harm.

This statement appears on the Department of Homeland Security Home page: “Through a multi-layered risk based system the Department of Homeland Security has taken significant steps to ensure that benefits are not granted to individuals who pose a threat to National Security.”

It is not easy for refugees to enter this country in search of better and safer lives for themselves and their families.
